The story behind Ultimate Yacht Management

Tell us about yourself

I grew up in London, a long way from the sea, but spent my summer holidays in Cowes, where I began sailing dinghies from a young age. Over time, I progressed to yachts, and what started as a hobby quickly became a lifelong passion. Before long, I was spending every possible summer racing and fully immersed in the sailing world.

After leaving school, I went straight to a local sailing school and obtained my RYA Yachtmaster qualification. This enabled me to begin working professionally in the marine industry as a first mate and delivery skipper aboard Oyster yachts across the UK and the Mediterranean.

During the winter months, I worked on a variety of racing yacht programmes, focusing on systems maintenance and development, alongside general vessel upkeep, including antifouling, polishing and refit support.

After several years working across the Solent and Europe, I chose to further my education at the University of Plymouth, where I studied Navigation and Maritime Science, followed by a Master’s degree in International Shipping. These qualifications provided a strong understanding of the commercial marine sector, as well as the supply chains and logistics that support effective yacht management.

What led you to starting Ultimate Yacht Management?

After leaving university, I realised I could not see myself sitting behind a desk for the next 35 years. For some time, I had been considering launching a yacht management company, having identified a clear gap in the market for a professional and reliable service that allows yacht owners to spend more time enjoying their vessels and less time dealing with maintenance, repairs and day-to-day administration.

An opportunity arose to begin working with several Oyster yachts, which allowed me to test the concept and build what is now Ultimate Yacht Management from the ground up. From that point, the business has grown organically through reputation, trust and results.

What is the best part of your job?

Nothing compares to seeing an owner take delivery of their yacht after a long build process. The sense of excitement and pride at handover is genuinely infectious and makes all the effort worthwhile.

A close second is getting the yacht out on the water the following day and putting it through its paces. That is when everything comes together and you see the true result of effective yacht management in action.
